Paver Projects
It can be intimidating to remove a paving stone if you haven’t done it before. We’ll walk through the basics of how it’s done so you can do this yourself. You might have seen pavers around that have set on a cement base and were mortared in place making them difficult to remove. But that’s not always how they’re constructed.

Most pavers are set onto a sand and gravel base and then cement poured over top of them creating a single solid piece. This makes removing pavers much easier because you aren’t working with puzzle pieces where each section is connected to another.

What You Need To Remove The Pavers

Removing pavers is a tricky job if you don’t have the right tools. When it comes to removing pavers, there are essentially three different, but equally effective methods. They are a paver-puller, two flathead screwdrivers, and two sturdy putty knives. Use the paver-puller when removing pavers, but the tools listed are also great options

How To Prepare For The Removal

When you’re looking to remove a paver, there are a few important steps to take before doing so. First, it’s recommended that you pour water around the edge of the paver. This helps loosen the grout in between the joints of those around it.

Next, tap the other pavers with a rubber mallet. This helps loosen up the joints and make it easier to remove. You don’t want to tap too hard with the mallet as you can crack older pavers which will ruin their look.

Removing The Paver

The easiest way to remove pavers is with a proper paver removal tool. The tool works by either wedging or pulling out the pavers without damaging the other pavers in the process. While the Tool can be used on pavers that have set for years, it is most successful for first-year installations.

The basic paver removal tool consists of two short metal handles attached to a thin metal blade. The upper part of each handle has a square hole for inserting a screwdriver or an Allen wrench. With this type of paver removal tool, you can use either method to loosen the paver from the concrete base.

Grab hold of one handle and insert a screwdriver into the top hole. Grasping both handles firmly, twist and push them back and forth while sliding them underneath the side of the paver. Press down on both handles while you push until you can grasp the top of the paver with your free hand.

Lift the paver and set it aside so that you can replace it with another paver later if necessary. Repeat this procedure for each individual paver in order to completely remove all of them from their installation site.
