Enjoy all the beauty and sound of a waterfall without the pond—safe, low-maintenance water features perfect for any Dayton, Ohio yard.
A pondless waterfall creates the soothing sight and sound of cascading water without standing water. The water disappears into a hidden underground reservoir filled with rock and gravel, then recirculates back to the top.
No deep water means less safety concerns for toddlers and young kids.
Requires less space than a traditional pond while delivering maximum impact.
No fish feeding, less algae control, easier cleanup—just enjoy.
Often easier to get approved since there's no standing water.
Vertical design works beautifully in areas where ponds won't fit.
Can be integrated into established gardens without major disruption.
0:00 Everybody thinks of waterfalls as just having kind of a cascading stair step. It's like, well, I got a hill, so the water's going to run downhill.
0:08 So we just dig out a ditch in the hill, put some rubber down, and put rocks down, and the water will just run down it.
0:15 If you go out into nature and do some exploring, you won't see water running down a consistent slope usually, unless it's just rock. You have water running across a large rock that hasn't eroded out.
0:24 One of the keys to a natural water feature is getting your water to pool, which not only gives you a more natural looking water feature instead of this staircase effect, but it will also give you deeper tones of sound, which is more calming than just this rushing cascade of water coming down the rocks.
0:47 Another thing is using large enough rocks. What you'll see sometimes is what we like to call in the industry a “string of pearls” look, where you look at a water feature and you have just a string of the same size of rocks coming down both sides of the water feature. Very clearly man-made. Something you'll never see in nature.
1:03 Another big piece to a natural looking water feature is your edge work. We touched on that a little bit with using different sides of boulders and not stacking the rocks, but having a proper edge to where we'll bring mulch right up to the rocks. Other places, we'll use some river cobble.
1:33 What we'll hear sometimes when we show up to a job is we'll dump all these large boulders out, and the homeowner is wondering what in the world's happening because, “I thought I signed up for a water feature, and we're getting all these massive rocks.”
1:42 Don't worry, that's part of the magic. And once it's all said and done, this is what it looks like. Every water feature is different, but the concept is to get those rocks tucked in there to where it looks like a ledge rock. The waterfall was just cut into that ledge.
1:58 Another huge piece to a natural looking water feature, probably one of the biggest ones that I see missed, is putting the spillway rock behind what we call frame rocks.
2:07 If you look at a water feature, I kind of think of a waterfall now as three rocks. You've got rock outcroppings on either side, and then you've got your spillway rock back in where the water's spilling over. That's true to nature.
2:21 You go most anywhere to falls, you don't expect to see a rock jutting out from a cliff with the cliff walls back behind it, a rock jutting out and the water running off the front edge of that.
2:30 Another thing that we really try to keep in mind and stress is putting a lot of twists and turns in the stream. Not only is it more true to nature, but it also is going to give you more viewing angles.
2:39 So we can put waterfalls angling this way and then wrap the stream around, and you have waterfalls aiming to another living area or a window. So you get multiple viewing angles. It also gives you a lot of twists and turns to the water current, so there's a lot of benefit to that. That's another rule or key to follow.
3:03 Another thing to really keep in mind is when you're going to be enjoying this water feature. For most of us working through the day, we want to come home at night, and especially in the fall, there's just something really calming about being able to come outside onto your patio with a cup of coffee and sit down and enjoy not only the sound of the water, but to be able to see it.
3:19 And to see the reflections of the light dancing off of the trees and things around from the lighting that we can put into that as well.
3:26 So hope that helps. Reach out to us for more landscape and water feature tips.
We design your waterfall location and size for optimal viewing angles, your unique property, and your desired outcome.
Professional excavation for the stream bed and underground basin, and install of underlayment and rubber liner.
Strategic and artistic placement of natural stone for realistic waterfalls and streams.
Pump installation, plumbing, and water testing for perfect flow.
Water flows from the top of the waterfall down through rocks and disappears into an underground reservoir (basin filled with gravel and stone). A pump recirculates the water back to the top, creating a continuous flow. There’s no deep body of water, making it safer and easier to maintain than a traditional pond.
Very little. You’ll need to check the water level occasionally (especially in hot weather) and add water as needed (unless autofill is active). Once or twice a year, clean debris from the basin. Occasionally add beneficial bactera and algaecide, unless Autodosing system and IonGen are installed. That’s it. No fish to feed, less algae to manage, easier cleanup.
No—pondless waterfalls don’t have deep enough water for fish. If you want fish, consider an ecosystem pond instead. However, pondless waterfalls still attract wildlife like birds and butterflies that are drawn to the sound and movement of water.
You can either keep it running (moving water rarely freezes, creating beautiful ice formations) or shut it down for winter. If you shut it down, we’ll walk you through the simple winterization process, or do it for you. Many homeowners keep them running to enjoy year-round.
Our pondless waterfalls range from $7k for a smaller 4-6′ feature (The Spring) to $16k-$18k for a 15-16′ dramatic installation (The Falls), and the sky is the limit from there. Custom-length streams and waterfalls that meander through your property are totally doable. Final pricing depends on site conditions, rock selection, and design complexity. All pricing includes installation, pump(s), basin(s), rocks, and landscaping.
